bleeding tdi
hi all , having replaced the engine in my tdi disco , I am having trouble bleeding the fuel system. can get fuel from the lift pump to filter to front of injector pump but no further . looking at the lift pump the outlet pipe to the filter is bent upwards and seem to have a small leak (wiped clean and dry , couple of pumps and a smear on the outer casing below pipe ). would this be a problem by letting air in and not letting it prime properly . cheers wayne

Re: bleeding tdi
Any air leak in front of the Injector Pump will cause hard starting to no starting.
Being a tdi (300?) common issues for no start are:
*Faulty lift pump (once the engine runs there is enough suction on the injector pump to allow it to run without needing the lift pump, although reduced power).
*Leaking fuel filter (not tight enough or seal has perished) or leaking filter head/fittings.
A tdi is a old school simple engine, so if all the above are covered, crack off the 4 fuel lines that feed each injector and crank over to see if you are getting fuel coming out, as you see each injector line "bleed up" (fuel coming out at a reasonable amount) tighten each line. It should then start.
Regardless of all the technical this and that, if a diesel wont start then it all relates to ONLY 2 reasons a diesel wont start:
*No compression.
*No fuel.
People sometimes say "no air" but this is pretty well impossible if it has an open intake that isnt blocked.

Re: bleeding tdi
haven't really had time to get the disco running (with work and a stint in hospital ) but i'm thinking faulty lift pump . doesn't seem to pump a real lot (has fair way to push fuel ) so might have to look at a replacement . ebay looks the cheapest . wayne

Re: bleeding tdi
Keep in mind though;
*lift pump sucks from the tank.
*The hand pump lever on it is pretty useless for determining if the pump is faulty.
*Dis-connect the feed line going to the Injector Pump, crank over and see how much fuel is delivered from the lift pump.
*Dont buy the cheap ones, they generally arent very good.
